After adjusting subluxation/active nerve interference of the bone, muscles, and ligaments, the intervertebral soft tissue (the disc) is then adjusted as well. The body will only receive a corrective thrust in a corrective direction on a structure that is in need of correction. Therefore, the intervertebral soft tissue will not be manipulated in any type of manual fashion. However, these soft tissues need adjustment specifically when displaced, bulging, or herniated. This will help healing by reducing inflammation and pressure on nerves, and allowing the afferent(incoming) communication to the deep spinal muscles to get better information facilitating proper muscular response and aiding in healing time. We find that X-ray is not as accurate as the Innate Reflex-Activated Leg Check in determining the area of subluxation/active nerve interference. We believe it is best to rely on Innate Intelligence in the determination of the subluxation/active nerve interference. There is always a time and a place for X-rays. Re.A.L.™ analysis is mostly about asking the body for diagnosis. Dr. Otto still uses clinical history, physical exam findings, and neurological and orthopedic exams to determine guide differential diagnosis. If he considers X-ray to be necessary on the first visit after thorough examination he will get an order written up for the appropriate imaging studies. We have to remember that X-ray studies expose patients to radiation, so that is thought about carefully and critically. If X-rays will not change the care plan Dr. Otto is going to suggest, then they are not necessary. Low force thrusts also do not carry the risk that high force thrusts do, therefore structurally there is no need for an X-ray to make sure it is safe to adjust a patient.

The audible pop sound (cavitation) occurs when a nitrogen gas bubble escapes from a joint after the bone is moved into the paraphysiological space, which is beyond normal anatomical range-of-motion. It is not necessarily indicative that a correction has been made to the subluxation/active nerve interference. We use the Reflex Activated Leg Check, then perform the appropriate adjustment, and then perform a post-adjustment leg check to verify clearance. If the reflex no longer appears, the correction has been made, whether or not an audible "pop" occurred. We sometimes get audibles in adjustments, but they are not as common in low-force adjusting. To prove to you that "pops/cracks" do not equivocate adjustments, crack your fingers. Does this mean you were adjusted? No, it does not.
